Martin went to Marburg University for his training as a Human Biologist. He obtained his Ph.D. from Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla, CA. In Barbara Ranscht's lab, he studied the interaction of the cytokine adiponectin with its receptor T-cadherin in the context of angiogenesis and heart disease. Then he went on to do his PostDoc with Adam Antebi at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Cologne. This is where he first used the nematode C. elegans for genetic screens.
